KCP Chronicles: Apex Squad Dominating NA Circuit in Split Two
Written by Trey Donovan
It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for the Kansas City Pioneers Apex team as they went from the best team in North America to finishing the split in 11th place. Despite the struggles since “Sirsay” left the team, the squad of “Mav,” “Cruelbuckle,” and “J.,” has a chance to book their ticket to Sapporo, Japan, for the ALGS championship.
The last match day of split two saw the Pioneers struggle for most of the day. Games one and two, on World’s Edge, would only see them get one point after placing 15th in game one. Game three would not garner much more positives as the Pioneers would get a kill point, KP, and get knocked out in 20th.
The first three maps saw the Pioneers obtain two points and struggle to get things going. With the series switching over to Storm Point, all the Pioneers needed was to get some solid performances to build momentum as they secured their spot in the regional finals. Game four would not get better for the squad as they would, again, go out first in 20th with no KP. Apex can be a cruel game, but the Pioneers needed something positive to take away from this match day.
Game five would bring that change. For this split, the Pioneers have relied more on their gun skill than holding out as long as possible to place higher. Of their 224 total points, 121 came from KP, while the rest are placement points. They land in 12th with 54% of their points coming from kill points, while being 19th in points coming from placement.
Let’s get back to match day game 5. The Pioneers would see an eight-point match powered by six KP. Cruelbuckle and J. would each secure three kills and get a team fight win under their belts. They would finish eighth in the match, but what matters is getting a solid game on the board.
Game six would see similar success as the squad would earn eight more points with four KP and four placement points. They finished in fifth after challenging SR, who was a duo at the time, and got a tad overzealous. That is how they operate; however, as stated earlier, they like to fight and get KP.
Though they might have struggled in the second half of their match days, the Pioneers have shown flashes with this roster and still secured a spot in the regional finals that will commence on Oct. 12. The team has time to iron out some things and has a chance to secure a spot in the ALGS Championship in Sapporo. Good Luck to Cruelbuckle, Mav, and J. next weekend as they look to show out and fight for their spot in Sapporo. #KCPWin (Also, buy the KCP Finals bundle).
